A note from the Fine Arts Coordinator,
Thank you so much for your support of the Fine Arts department! I am continually blown away by the talent we have at IC Imagine, from Lower School to Upper School. Our hallways are covered with beautiful art, and our classrooms are filled with talented musicians and the IPAC is filled with rehearsals for upcoming theater performances.

Also in the band department, we had one student make the All Region Jazz Band! Jude Wall represented our school recently in this endeavor and also qualified for All State Jazz!
Middle and Upper School Chorus
The Middle and Upper School Choruses had a fantastic concert on January 23rd, celebrating the music of America. Highlights from the concert included each group performing a Native American inspired piece, a Jazz piece, an American Folk Song, and a Revolutionary or Civil War inspired piece. We even had members of the band join us for a few of our songs, as well as some violinists from the choruses. We ended the evening with all the choruses performing one song together, a total of over 70 voices singing together! We’re looking forward to our MPA performances in March, followed by our Spring concert.
On February 8th, senior Makenna Johnson participated in the 76th Annual Mars Hill Choral Festival at Mars Hill University. Makenna spent the day learning under the direction of Dr. Linda Fredenburgh. The day ended with a concert of over 350 voices performing six different pieces of music. As part of the weekend’s performance, Makenna is now eligible for a $92,000 scholarship to Mars Hill University!
Another highlight from the weekend was being able to see IC Imagine Alum Owen Ward perform as part of the Mars Hill University Choir.

K-1st, students have studied the artwork of Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Jacob Lawrence. We have created various works that emulate the styles of these influential artists.
3rd Grade, students have created abstract works inspired by the artist Julie Mehretu.
4th-grade art classes, students are exploring the intersection of art and design through a focused study of Ed Welburn, General Motors’ first African-American Vice President of Design and a trailblazer in the automotive industry. This lesson highlights how Welburn's artistic vision and innovative thinking shaped the creation of iconic car designs, demonstrating the vital role of creativity in solving practical design challenges. Building on this inspiration, students are designing their own concept cars using the digital art app Sketchpad. Through this process, they are learning foundational digital art techniques, including layering, color selection, and tool navigation, while also engaging in creative problem-solving. This hands-on approach introduces them to digital design as a dynamic medium for artistic expression, equipping them with valuable 21st-century skills in a creative and engaging way.
5th grade, students are diving into the expressive world of Ernie Barnes and Alberto Giacometti as they prepare for an exciting figure sculpture project. We’re exploring the dynamic, elongated forms of Giacometti’s sculptures and the vibrant, movement-filled paintings of Barnes, discussing how each artist captured the essence of human emotion and activity in their work. These studies provide inspiration as students sketch their own figures in motion, focusing on proportion, gesture, and expression. These sketches will serve as the foundation for their sculptures, where they’ll bring their designs to life using wire and other materials. This project encourages students to think critically about how art conveys movement and emotion while developing their skills in three-dimensional design.
Middle School Visual Art
Check back next month for what’s happening in the Middle School Art world!
Upper School Visual Art
Ceramics 1 students have finished up their face mugs! Here’s just a few-
Art 1, we made batik pillows, which are all stitched up and on display in the Upper School hallway across from Ms. Guss’s room. The students did a great job with both the batiking and sewing their pillows on the sewing machine.
3D Sculpture, students have finished carving their wooden spoons and will take on Bamboo Wind Chimes in the upcoming project.
Art 1, we have just finished making our chess pieces and they did a great job with them. We are currently working on collages and cannot wait to see how they come out.
Art 2, we just finished our cardboard sculpture and some of the students took their creation to the next level of their imagination. We are currently exploring the balance of Yin / Yang and we will keep you posted.
Art 3 & 4, they have continued to impress us with their work. This is their Object Self Portrait they immersed themselves into.
