Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Department has had a bustling month, and there are numerous achievements to commemorate.

In the Music World

Middle and Upper School Band

We had 6 students audition for the All Region Jazz Band this year. This was the first year we have sent students to this audition and we had one student, Warren McElreath, make the middle school All Region Jazz Band! We are so proud of all who auditioned! Warren recently participated in a weekend clinic at Asheville High School concluding with a fantastic performance.

Additionally, ICI had 5 band musicians selected for the 2024 All District Band Festival at WCU February 9-10. Julian Kasalu and Arya Patel (9th grade), Warren McElreath and Jon Gantt (8th grade) and Lila Stanton (7th grade).

These musicians were selected by an audition process to join other musicians from throughout western North Carolina to rehearse as a group and perform in a concert on Saturday afternoon. Julian and Arya were a part of the 9-10 Symphonic Band and Warren, Jon, and Lila were members of the Middle School Concert Band. These musicians did an outstanding job representing themselves and ICI.Congratulations to these excellent student musicians!

The band also volunteered to cheer on our kingfishers at 2 middle school basketball games this past month! We enjoyed joining the energy of the ball game and playing some cool music too!

Middle School Chorus

Middle School Chorus is gearing up for their MPAs (Music Performance Adjudications) in March and are performing for their peers on February 21st in preparation.

Upper School Chorus

Congratulations to Karsyn Adamson on her participation in the Mars Hill 75th Choral Festival on 2/10. Karsyn went through an audition process and selection process to be a part of the festival. By being selected for this festival, Karsyn has been awarded $23,000 a year to attend Mars Hill University. We are so proud of you!

In the Visual Art World

Middle School Art

In middle school, we finished up our homage to Carl by creating the public art piece below. It’s pretty awesome.

Currently, we have begun the work that will ultimately prepare us to make our annual self portraits. Each of the students have had their portraits made (see below) and now they are practicing the technique that will help them to be successful in executing their work.

Upper School Art

In Ceramics 1- Students are working on creating their flat coil vessels.  These are the largest things they have built this year! They are coming out great and students are learning the ins and outs of building to a larger scale.

The ugly mugs students built before break are all glazed and complete!

In Ceramics 2, they continue to complete their themed teapots with matching tea bowls.

In Photo 1, Students have begun their portrait unit. Students are learning about lighting, the effect of body positioning, and the use of depth of field and shutter speed when photographing in the studio.

Students are practicing the techniques and tools they will use to edit these photographs by creating floating fruit images!

In Digital Art 1, Ribbons!  Students have been making ribbon compositions while learning about realistic value gradations, balancing composition, color schemes, and incorporating text!
