Lower School Families,

As we head into Fall Break, we wanted to take a minute to thank you all for such a positive and smooth start to the school year. We have loved getting to see how all of our returning students have grown and changed and getting to know those who joined us for the first time this year. We have enjoyed watching everyone settle into new grade levels, new classrooms, and new routines! This morning, Mr. Jackson handed out the new issue of the Kingfisher Kid Comic. Our students were so excited about the 5th issue! Mr. Jackson features student artwork and ideas throughout the issue. Check it (and all previous issues) out here.

This week, our third graders and Kindergarteners headed to Mt. Mitchell and the Apple Orchard for their first field trips of the year! We are proud of the way they represented our community as they ventured off campus. We look forward to more field trips as we continue through the fall!

We are still looking for parents who are interested in becoming Grade Level Parent Coordinator.  You will have the opportunity to get to know the school, teachers, other families, and become a part of your child’s grade level community. Interested? Click here to submit an application and learn more.

We would love to see you at Math Night on Thursday, October 6th from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. Please join us for a night of Math Fun!

Save the date for the Fall Festival on October 20th, from 5-7 p.m.  This is an event for the whole IC Imagine community. We still need around 100 volunteers. If we don’t have volunteers this event cannot happen. Click here to learn more.

What is “Orff”?

Orff-Schulwerk is a style of music and movement education developed by composer Carl Orff. The Orff approach begins with what is natural: the body, the voice, and the child’s world of play. A musical experience may start with moving the body, saying a rhyme, or playing a singing game. These playful explorations spark curiosity. Then, through imitation, we build musical skills. A chant may become a rhythm on a percussion instrument. A song may expand into an instrumental ensemble with different rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic parts. Children expand on the musical ideas we explore by composing, improvising, and choreographing their own music and movement. The emphasis on student-created music and movement distinguishes an Orff music classroom. The simplicity of the media used (the body, the voice, and developmentally appropriate instruments), allows children to create and perform music that is rich in complexity and artistic integrity. The special xylophones which can be played in various pentatonic and diatonic keys offer a beautiful sound immediately and are easily accessible. The Orff approach helps children build musicianship while fostering creativity and collaboration.
