Middle School Families,

It has been another great week and we are so proud of our Middle School students as they continue to DIVE into all of our school expectations. Please see the following information regarding students' safety and well-being, Adventure Club mountain biking, ASCEND,  and our first Parent U.

“You Deserve to be Safe”

Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority -- and requires a proactive approach to violence prevention.

On September 1, 2021, Senate Bill 693 was signed into Session Law 2021-132, effective immediately. Among other requirements related to child welfare, this legislation requires the following of Public School Units:

A document with information on child abuse and neglect, including age-appropriate information on sexual abuse, must be provided by PSUs to students in grades six through 12 at the beginning of each school year;

A display must be posted in visible, high-traffic areas throughout each public secondary school (grades 6-12)

Alongside the handout, the following information was reviewed with students:

  • Child abuse is when someone, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm, or risk of serious harm to a child.  There are different types of abuse (review the provided handout).

  • Students were encouraged to reach out to the phone number 828-250-5500 provided on the form,  teachers, administrators, school nurses, school counselors, or other trusted adults here at school if they or someone they know are suffering from abuse.

  • Students were told that if they are suffering from child abuse, it is NOT their fault.  They deserve help and they deserve to be safe.

  • If reviewing the information brought up uncomfortable thoughts or feelings, students were encouraged to reach out to a teacher, school counselor, or other trusted adult at home or school who will be sure to get them the support they deserve.

  • Students were reminded that their mental and physical safety is our top priority and we are here and want to help.

Please reach out to Mental Health Team members or our Administration Team with any questions or additional information.
